Racecards, form and odds for a day at the races

How the numbers work

Win chances start from the betting forecast with the bookmaker margin removed by the power method, which takes more margin off outsiders than favourites. Recent form, course and distance wins, rider claims, first-time headgear and, at Bath, the low-draw bias then tilt those prices by a few points. Place chances use a discounted Harville model (Lo, Bacon-Shone & Busche), which avoids the plain Harville habit of overrating favourites for second and third. Race confidence combines how clear the top chance is, the spread across the field, how much form there is to go on, and whether form and market agree.
